What are the different mail types?

SELECTING THE CORRECT MAIL TYPE is VERY IMPORTANT for making sure everything works correctly in the software. We want to produce the correct shipping labels for you and make sure that the customer is charged correctly for shipping and any other associated fees. Here is what each type does for the mail.

Envelope

This is a standard envelope. By default, it weighs approximately 1 ounce, but no more than 3.5 ounces. It is at least 3-1/2 inches by 5 inches, and no more than 6-1/8 inches by 11–1/2 inches by 1/4-inch thick.

Large Envelope (Flat)

This is the large envelope or a "flat". It weighs no more than 10 pounds and at most 12 inches by 15 inches by 3/4 inch thick.

Maximum Sizes of a Standard Letter and a Large Envelope (Flat)

Magazine

A magazine or catalog is in terms of shipping is the same as a LARGE ENVELOPE. If it's parameters are higher than the maximum size and weight of a large envelope it is considered a package. When selecting this type, it will also require the weight and dimensions. In addition, it will disable the customer’s ability to request an Open & Scan.

Postcard

A postcard is any 2-sided mail that cannot be opened. Open & Scan is disabled and it will require a picture for both sides of the mail item.

Package

A Package is used for sending items that do not fit in a large envelope and/or exceed the weight of 13 ounces in our system. They also may need additional packing, such as merchandise, gifts, or bulkier items. It will require the weight and dimensions for the purpose of shipment requests, oversize package fees, and storage fees.

  • At least 6 inches long x 3 inches wide x 1/4 inch high
  • Maximum dimensions (Length + 2x Width + 2x Height) cannot exceed 108 inches
  • No more than 70 pounds.

Any Mail Packages larger than above are considered oversized, or "Freight". The customer likely will not be provided options to ship Freight items, therefore we encourage you to split oversized packages into multiple Mail Items that fall below the above maximums.
